NEW YORK, NY – On Wednesday, January 23, Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) and the Schools of Public Engagement at The New School will host a forum for candidates running for New York City Public Advocate. The forum will focus on a number of social and public health issues affecting New Yorkers, including HIV/AIDS prevention and education, substance use, mental health, LGBT rights, and discrimination.

“New York City has provided a progressive sanctuary for many populations who feel threatened by the Federal Government’s discriminatory policies, but we still have work to do to solve a number of ongoing disparities, particularly in public health,” said GMHC CEO Kelsey Louie. “Our next Public Advocate will confront a wide array of injustices affecting vulnerable New Yorkers, and we want to have the candidates who are running for this important role lay out their priorities for tackling the issues that GMHC and other health service organizations are committed to.”

The forum’s audience will include GMHC clients and supporters; New School students, administrators, and faculty; and members of the public. The forum will include time for the participating candidates to answer questions from the audience.
